The Leica M500 is a precision surgical microscope specifically designed for ophthalmic applications, such as cataract surgery. A generation newer than the widely acclaimed M690, the M500 utilizes a vastly different technology than its predecessor. However, for those who have been trained to use the M690 or for those who are accustomed in using the M690, the M500 still has a lot of similarities (in terms of operation and controls) with the older model.
The Leica M500 is a surgical microscope for use in the field of Ophthalmology, such as cataract surgeries. Developed and designed by Leica Microsystems to simplify a surgeon's task, the M500 is a compact, easy-to-handle, and versatile operating microscope that is it well suited not only for ophthalmic applications but also for neuro, spine surgery, and ENT procedures. The M500 surgical microscope is provided with a dual 21-volt 150-watt light source and an inclinable, widefield binocular. It is also equipped with a versatile objective lens (f=200mm). These features allow the microscope to deliver crisp and razor-sharp images with enhanced optical clarity. Equipped with a 17-inch LCD monitor, the medical personnel can view the scanned anatomical part with clarity. It is also provided with a foot switch designed to electrically control a number of functions of the microscope.
