Linear Accelerators

Linear Accelerators

Linear accelerators (LINAC) use microwave technology to deliver high energy x-rays to treat cancer patients through radiation therapy. These treatments can target all parts and organs of the body, and can be fine-tuned in such a way that only the cancer cells are destroyed while healthy tissues are spared. LINAC systems utilize lasers and a movable treatment couch for proper patient positioning. Radiation is delivered to any angle by rotating the gantry and moving the treatment couch. Modern linear accelerators observe high safety for both patients and operating staff, who are housed in a room shielded by concrete and lead to prevent leakage of x-rays. Linear accelerators account for unprecedented accuracy and safety in treating tumors, and are indispensable tools for radiation oncology care providers.
